Purpose:  

At City Football Group, our Data Insights & Decision Technology (DIDT) team are continuing to evolve and enhance our impact on the decision-making processes across our football clubs. Through our continued investment in Artificial Intelligence and Simulation we are testing and refining footballing principles and building solutions that enable key stakeholders and performance practitioners to make better decisions faster. 

 

This role will work within our Football AI function, collaborating with the wider DIDT team and CFG Data Engineers, to theorize, design, develop, test and implement innovative solutions that will place the power of our AI models into the hands of key football stakeholders. 

 

Accountabilities with Key Outcomes:  

1 

Working in the Data Insights & Decision Technology team alongside CFG Data Engineers to help solve football performance challenges through the development of mathematical models that are deployed via innovative applications. 

2 

Play a key role in developing our Narrow AI platform to identify talent, inform development pathways and understand & predict the football transfer market 

3 

Conducting research though applied experimentation and modelling that will evolve our understanding of football from a recruitment, medical and on-pitch perspective. 

4 

Play a collaborative role within the DIDT team in advancing our computer vision, simulation & reinforcement learning environments

5 

Working with the Football AI team to productionize our AI-based solutions that support decision making processes across our football clubs. 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:   

Essential  

MSc or PhD in Computer Science, Engineering or related subject. 

 

3+ years working in a field related to computer science 

 

Applied expertise in using Python, C++ or other programming language. 

 

Experience with big data tools such as Databricks, Spark, Hadoop or similar. 

 

Experience with Azure, AWS or GCP cloud services or equivalent. 

 

Demonstrable experience developing computer vision algorithms. 

 

Insatiable curiosity, imagination and creativity to come up with ideas to tackle football performance challenges and design/implement cutting edge solutions. 

 

Experience working with both structured and unstructured data-sources including text, video and spatio-temporal data. 

 

Evidence of working with and deriving actionable insights from football data either as a hobby or within previous employment.  

 

Ability to work with our Data Insights & Decision Technology team to understand the performance challenges faced by our clubs and create strategies that deliver positive interventions.  

 

Ability to work in an agile manner suited to the innovative and fast-paced nature of the football industry.  

 

Desirable  

Experience in producing computer simulations from a mathematical specification. 

 

Experience working and communicating in the sporting environment.  

 

Experience with data pipeline and workflow management tools such as Azure Data Factory, AWS data pipelines, Apache Airflow, etc. 

 

 

 

 

       

 

 

 

 

Job Impact/Influence Measures:  

Delivery of activities related to a specific area of work with CFG, including technical/para-professional support and operational delivery  

Operational/analytical role, with specific knowledge/expertise primarily developed through specialised training. 

Decision-making Authority:  

Focus will be on managing processes and activities against agreed plans, co-ordinating activities with colleagues. Up to monthly planning horizons. 

Accountable for the delivery of specific, time-bound outcomes – working towards agreed/recognised/standardised outputs.
