Job Description

Role Title: Head of Physical Performance-Academy

Reports to:  Director of Performance Services

Division: Manchester City Academy

Department: Manchester City Academy Performance

Role specific purpose:     



1st stage interviews for this role  are provisionally scheduled for  8th/ 9th September, with an expected round two 16th or 19th September.


To lead, manage & support the development/delivery of Physical Preparation strategies throughout all phases of the Academy.


 To collaborate effectively with 1 st team Performance Services, ensuring effective strategies are in place to optimise player transition into elite senior football.


To ensure adherence to the highest standards of governance and safety to comply with the requirements of a Premier League category 1 Academy.


The role requires direct line management of the Sport Science department comprising of 6 Sport Scientists and 1 Performance Nutritionist.


Role specific accountabilities:


Design and develop the physical strategies required to develop academy players to the highest levels of elite football. This is achieved through effective leadership and management of all Academy sport science and nutrition staff and collaboration with coaching staff and wider Performance Services disciplines (e.g Physiotherapy, Medical and Psychology).


Ensure the optimal levels of physical performance are reached by the Professional Development Phase squads to effectively compete throughout each season, and to support the transition into the Manchester City 1st team or for loan/transfer. This includes a specific focus on the players within the EDS.


Ensure age-appropriate physical benchmarks are achieved throughout the academy through effective departmental strategies, objectives, monitoring, evaluation and communication.


Lead a comprehensive interdisciplinary approach that includes close links to all areas of the academy,1 st team and group clubs.


Lead the continual development of scientifically underpinned protocols for all aspects of Sport Science and Physical Performance.


Set annual objectives and evaluate performances of direct reporting staff to increase impact of the department and enhance the development of each staff member.


Play a key role in the Performance Services Management Team and Wider Academy Management Team to shape the practices, behaviors, standards and uphold a highperformance culture.

Role specific knowledge, skills and experience:  



  • A clear understanding of how to plan, implement and evaluate effective athletic development strategies in all the key practical aspects of sport science / athletic development.

Technical/Work-Based Skills

  • Have a clear understanding of the principles of physical performance and how to deploy sport specific strategies that enable improved performance in a team sport environment.
  • Demonstrate good levels of PC / IT literacy, in particular the use of Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint. General Skills and Attributes
  • Demonstrate the ability to manage people and effectively evaluate staff performance.
  • Challenge staff performance, standards, values & behaviours according to the Academy Code of Conduct.
  • Be able to work to tight deadlines & be flexible in the expected working pattern.
  • Have the ability to work in a fast-moving environment.
  • Develop networks, create and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Have facilitation skills, including the ability to manage and resolve tensions, disputes and conflicts.

  • Experience delivering high quality athletic development training programmes to young athletes
  • Extensive understanding of growth and maturation principles of youth athletes.
  • Management and Development of skilled/specialised staff.


  • A post-graduate qualification in a Sport Science or Human Performance related field (e.g. physiology, kinesiology, anatomy, biomechanics and nutrition).



  • Knowledge of valid and reliable methods for monitoring and evaluating individual’s physical abilities, interpreting results and implementing appropriate training strategies in Football and/or team sports.


Technical/Work-Based Skills

  • Possess the knowledge and understanding of how to develop coaching and communication skills that enables practitioners to engage and motivate young players to improve their athletic skills.
  • Demonstrate experience, understanding and ability to collect and visualise data using tableau, Power BI or similar platforms to generate actionable insight

General Skills and Attributes

  • Demonstrate a positive approach to leadership and problem solving.
  • An ability and passion to challenge the norm and willingness to look at innovative approaches to problem solving
  • Track record in working within large interdisciplinary coaching and support teams.
  • Experience of leading departments and managing multiple direct reports.
  • Experience of working with multiple stakeholders, both internal and external, to effectively deliver strategy and impact performance.
  • Experience of working as part of Management and Leadership teams delivering against departmental or organisational strategy


  • Significant experience of employing valid and reliable methods for monitoring and evaluating individual’s physical abilities, interpreting results, and implementing appropriate training strategies.
  • Experience in delivering coach and athlete education at high levels of sports Qualifications
  • UKSCA accreditation as an Accredited Strength and Conditioning coach
  • BASES accreditation
  • FA Level 2 coaching qualification
  • Any other relevant coaching, leadership or management qualifications to support the successful delivery of the role.
